Global Affairs Canada's Quarterly Economic and Trade Report
Spring 2026
Highlights:
- Global GDP and trade slowed in Q4 2025, but full-year merchandise trade still grew a strong 4.4 per cent thanks to early‑year strength.
- Canada’s economy shrank at a 0.6 per cent annualized pace in Q4 due to inventory reductions, yet still grew 1.7 per cent in 2025 - slightly above the Bank of Canada’s earlier projection and avoiding recession.
- Exports rose 3.1 percent in Q4, driven by gold. U.S.-bound exports fell to a record‑low share, but a surge in non‑U.S. markets offset the decline, leaving 2025 export growth at 0.7 per cent.
- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects global GDP to grow by 3.3 per cent in 2026, supported by strong technology investment in North America and Asia, alongside continued fiscal and monetary support. For Canada, the Bank of Canada expects growth to slow to 1.1 per cent in 2026, as net exports weigh on the expansion, while public consumption and government spending provide positive contributions.
